Summary

Workers seek new jobs for many reasons. When they change jobs for career reasons, their salaries tend to increase, whereas when they change jobs for family reasons, they may experience wage losses. While men and women change jobs at similar rates, mothers are more likely to prioritize family-friendly employment. As a result, their wages fall behind with potentially large consequences over the life course.
