Summary

The health needs of veterans often go unmet, with specialist veteran hospitals oversubscribed, and regular hospitals not equipped to deal with their specific problems. With the focus of healthcare shifting from hospital-based disease management to primary-care-based disease prevention, a new initiative at Old Dominion University School of Nursing offers a solution. Training nurses for primary care roles will help address veterans’ healthcare needs before they become acute.
