Summary

Here, we describe the roles of distinct macrophage subsets during the development of HIV lung disease that are more critical than CD4 T cell depletion.

The Kuroda Lab demonstrated for the first time that destruction of tissue macrophages by the virus and increased monocyte turnover response, rather than the depletion of CD4 T cells, are indispensable in the pathogenesis of AIDS based on studies using the non-human primate model.
